In 1956, several parents who wanted their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities to remain home, in their communities with the same rights to be educated, employed, live and recreate as any other person without disabilities. These amazing people banded together to create the organization we now call The Arc Mesa County, Inc. At the same time, across the country, families were similarly banding together to create their own Arc’s. Today there are over 730 Arc chapters in the United States and 14 in Colorado. All Arc chapters are their own non-profit agencies, each represent the area and needs of their communities through advocacy directed by their Board of Directors.
